The long read

About the breed

Breeders in the southern and eastern United States, particularly around Georgia and Los Angeles, set out in the early 1990s to create a bully-type dog focused on companionship rather than any working or fighting background, deliberately selecting for sociable, biddable temperaments. The Classic variety keeps a leaner, less exaggerated frame than the Standard, Pocket or XL types that were bred afterwards, closer in silhouette to the original American Pit Bull Terrier.

Living with an American Bully Classic generally means living with an affectionate, people-focused dog that is eager to please and good with children when properly raised and socialised. They are muscular and strong for their size, so basic lead manners matter, and like most bully breeds they can be selective about other dogs, particularly of the same sex, without careful early socialisation. They do not need excessive exercise but do need regular structured activity to stay in condition and avoid weight gain.

Today the breed is recognised by the American Bully Kennel Club (ABKC), the breed's founding registry, as well as the United Kennel Club, though not by the KC, AKC or FCI, and it remains most popular in the United States, though it has a growing following in the UK and Europe as a family companion.

Skull

The American Bully (Classic)'s skull is judged on balance rather than size — proportionate to the body, with a clean cheek and a stop typical of the breed. Coarseness or an over-refined head are both faulted.

Health

What to screen for

Green means little to worry about, amber means ask the breeder for test results, red means manage it actively.

  • Hip dysplasia

    Screen for it

Ask for hip scores on both parents given the breed's heavy build.

  • Skin allergies

    Low concern

Short coat and skin folds in some lines can trigger allergies; check regularly.

  • Cherry eye

    Low concern

Ask breeders whether the line has a history of eyelid gland prolapse.

  • Brachycephalic-adjacent breathing issues

    Watch closely

Heavier-headed lines can struggle in heat; avoid exercise in hot weather.

American Bullies typically live 10 to 13 years. As a heavily muscled breed, weight management matters for joint health, and owners should keep an eye on exercise tolerance in hot weather given the broad chest and shorter muzzle seen in some lines. Reputable breeders will offer hip scoring and, where relevant, cardiac screening given the breed's stocky build.
