The long read
About the breed
The Pocket variety emerged in the 2000s as breeders within the American Bully community selected for shorter-legged, more compact dogs while keeping the broad head and muscular build associated with the breed. It shares the same foundation bloodlines as the Standard and Classic varieties, drawing on American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier ancestry, but is bred specifically to stay under a set height limit.
Living with a Pocket Bully means living with a small but surprisingly heavy and muscular dog that is generally affectionate, confident and good with familiar children. Despite the compact size, this is not a fragile toy breed; the Pocket retains the bully breed's strength and enthusiasm, so lead manners and basic training are worth establishing early. They do not need much space and adapt reasonably well to flat or apartment living provided daily exercise needs are met.
Today the Pocket Bully is popular in the US, UK and increasingly Europe as a family companion, valued for combining bully-breed looks with a size that suits smaller households. As with other American Bully varieties it is recognised by the American Bully Kennel Club (ABKC), the breed's founding registry, and the United Kennel Club, though not by the KC, AKC or FCI.

Health
What to screen for
Green means little to worry about, amber means ask the breeder for test results, red means manage it actively.
Patellar luxation
Screen for it
Short-legged build makes knee checks worthwhile before buying.
Hip dysplasia
Screen for it
Ask for hip scores despite the smaller frame; the build is still heavy.

Low concern
Short coat and skin folds in some lines can be prone to irritation.
Breathing difficulty in heat
Watch closely
Heavier-headed individuals should avoid exercise in hot weather.
