Origins of the Ariegeois

The Pyrenean foothills of Ariege demanded a hound with stamina and a fine nose to work steep, scrub-covered slopes all day. Local packs of scenthounds were refined through careful crossing in the early twentieth century to produce a breed suited to this punishing country. Its pale, elegant coat and steady voice made it a favourite among huntsmen who worked in small, close-knit packs. The result is a hound built for endurance rather than speed.

The long read
About the breed
Generations of work over steep, scrub-covered ground shaped a hound with great stamina, a fine nose and a deep, carrying voice used to communicate with huntsmen and other pack members over long distances. Its short, dense white-and-orange coat protects it from brush and weather without becoming heavy.
In the home, the Ariegeois is affectionate and even-tempered but retains a strong hunting drive and needs substantial daily exercise; it is not suited to sedentary households or small gardens. It gets on well with other dogs, having been bred to work in packs, and is generally gentle with people it knows.
Today the breed remains rare outside France, kept mainly by hunters in its native region, with only a small population registered elsewhere in Europe.
