Origins of the Blue Bay Shepherd

Developed near Tampa Bay in Florida in the early 2000s, the breed was created specifically as a companion animal rather than shaped by any regional working need, which is why its "origin" is a breeding programme rather than a landscape.

The long read
About the breed
The breed was created in Florida in the early 2000s by breeder Vicki Spencer, who crossed Dutch Shepherds, German Shepherds, Siberian Huskies and low-content wolfdogs over several generations, aiming to fix the striking blue-grey coat and pale eyes while breeding out the unpredictability that can come with high wolf content. The name refers to Tampa Bay, where the foundation kennel was based. It remains an unofficial, developing breed with no major kennel club recognition and a small, tightly managed gene pool.
Living with a Blue Bay Shepherd is closer to living with a large, driven working dog than with a wolf. They are intelligent, athletic and bond closely with their household, but they need consistent structure, plenty of physical and mental exercise, and secure containment, since a bored dog of this build will dig, jump or chew its way to entertainment. Early, extensive socialisation is important, and prospective owners are generally expected to have prior experience with primitive or working breeds before a breeder will place a puppy with them.
Because the breed is so new and numbers are small, temperament and health can vary more from litter to litter than in long-established breeds, and buyers should ask hard questions about the specific ancestry of any puppy, including how much wolf content, if any, sits behind it. Reputable breeders test extensively for hip and joint soundness and keep detailed pedigree records precisely because the breed's reputation depends on proving it can be a stable companion rather than a novelty.

The points of the breed
Hover or tap a numbered point to read what the standard asks for.

Point 1
Skull
The Blue Bay Shepherd's skull is judged on balance rather than size — proportionate to the body, with a clean cheek and a stop typical of the breed. Coarseness or an over-refined head are both faulted.
Colours & patterns
Recognised coats
Which coats the standard accepts — and which are simply popular.

Blue-grey
Standard colour
The signature slate-blue coat the breed is named for.

Black and tan
Standard colour
A darker variant seen from Dutch and German Shepherd ancestry.

Sable
Standard colour
A banded coat pattern inherited from Shepherd lines.

Health
What to screen for
Green means little to worry about, amber means ask the breeder for test results, red means manage it actively.
Hip dysplasia
Screen for it
Ask for hip and elbow scores on both parents given the mixed working ancestry.
Unpredictable temperament variation
Low concern
Ask the breeder about wolf content and meet the puppy's parents before committing.
Limited health data
Low concern
As a new breed, long-term health statistics are still thin, so ask breeders directly what issues they have seen.
