Origins of the Bohemian Shepherd

Illustrated map showing the origin of the Bohemian Shepherd

Bohemian farms needed a versatile, medium-sized herding dog able to work livestock and guard property through a full range of continental seasons. The breed developed over centuries from crosses of local farm dogs with German and other Central European shepherd types. Its balanced build and moderate coat reflect a generalist farm dog rather than a specialist for one climate or terrain.

The long read

About the breed

Its long history as an all-round farm dog shaped a versatile, alert and biddable temperament suited equally to herding, guarding and general work.

As a companion it is affectionate, energetic and eager to please, doing well in active households and performing strongly in obedience and agility.

The breed nearly vanished during the 20th century but has been carefully rebuilt since Czech independence and now has a small, growing following.

Skull

The Bohemian Shepherd's skull is judged on balance rather than size — proportionate to the body, with a clean cheek and a stop typical of the breed. Coarseness or an over-refined head are both faulted.

Health

What to screen for

Green means little to worry about, amber means ask the breeder for test results, red means manage it actively.

As a breed rebuilt from a small founder population, genetic diversity is actively monitored by Czech breed clubs to avoid problems associated with inbreeding. Hip dysplasia is occasionally reported and screening is recommended for breeding stock. Overall the breed is considered generally healthy and robust, benefiting from careful, structured management during its recent revival.
