The long read

About the breed

Its long history working the harsh Spanish landscape produced a dog of great substance and stamina, methodical rather than fast, with a strong point and steady temperament suited to walked-up hunting.

At home it is a calm, loyal and even-tempered dog, generally easy-going with family, though it retains a strong hunting drive and needs regular outdoor exercise to thrive.

Today it remains the most popular native pointing breed in Spain, widely used by hunters there, though it is still rarely seen outside the country.

Skull

The Burgos Pointer's skull is judged on balance rather than size — proportionate to the body, with a clean cheek and a stop typical of the breed. Coarseness or an over-refined head are both faulted.

Health

What to screen for

Green means little to worry about, amber means ask the breeder for test results, red means manage it actively.

As a heavy, loose-skinned breed, the Burgos Pointer can be prone to ear infections, entropion or ectropion, and hip dysplasia; regular eye and ear checks are recommended. Otherwise the breed is hardy and long-lived, having been selected over generations for the ability to work long days in a harsh climate.
