Origins of the Catalan Sheepdog

Illustrated map showing the origin of the Catalan Sheepdog

The rugged foothills of the Catalan Pyrenees required a hardy, weatherproof dog able to manage flocks over difficult terrain and changeable weather. Long isolation in rural Catalonia let the breed develop its distinctive shaggy coat and steady, watchful temperament undisturbed by outside influence. Its dual role of both herding and guarding shaped an unusually versatile working dog.

The long read

About the breed

Centuries of working steep, difficult terrain in variable weather shaped a hardy, intelligent dog with strong protective instincts alongside herding skill.

As a companion it is loyal, affectionate and playful with its family, though naturally wary of strangers, and it needs regular exercise and mental engagement.

Still actively used as a working sheepdog in Catalonia, the breed also has a steady following as a family companion in Spain and a small international presence.

Health

What to screen for

Green means little to worry about, amber means ask the breeder for test results, red means manage it actively.

The Catalan Sheepdog is a generally robust, healthy breed, though hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy are recorded occasionally and can be screened for. Its coat requires regular maintenance to prevent matting and associated skin irritation. As an active working breed it tends to remain fit and sound well into old age when given adequate exercise and coat care.
