Origins of the Cesky Fousek

Illustrated map showing the origin of the Cesky Fousek

The forested hills and mixed farmland of Bohemia called for a hardy, all-purpose gundog able to point, track and retrieve across varied ground and water, and centuries of local breeding produced a distinctly Czech wirehaired pointer.

The long read

About the breed

Its development as an all-round hunting dog produced a versatile pointer capable of tracking, pointing and retrieving on land and from water, valued for stamina and a strong nose.

As a companion it is affectionate, loyal and biddable, doing best with an active family able to provide plenty of exercise and engagement.

After near disappearance in the 20th century, the breed was carefully revived and is now the national gundog of the Czech Republic, though it remains rare outside central Europe.

Health

What to screen for

Green means little to worry about, amber means ask the breeder for test results, red means manage it actively.

The breed is generally robust, though hip dysplasia and occasional ear infections occur; screening is recommended by Czech breed authorities. Having been rebuilt from a limited founder population in the 20th century, genetic diversity is monitored, but the Cesky Fousek today is a hardy, healthy working breed.
