Origins of the Drentsche Patrijshond

Illustrated map showing the origin of the Drentsche Patrijshond

The heathland and small farms of Drenthe province produced a versatile, adaptable pointing dog that could work closely with its handler, guard the farm and hunt partridge, remaining virtually unchanged since its medieval origins.

The long read

About the breed

Its long history as an all-purpose farm and hunting dog in Drenthe shaped a close-working, versatile pointer with a strong bond to its handler and a calm, steady disposition in the field.

At home it is affectionate, loyal and good with children, though it is also alert and can be reserved with strangers, making it a capable watchdog as well as companion.

Today it remains popular in the Netherlands as both a working gundog and family companion, with a small but dedicated following internationally, particularly in Scandinavia and North America.

Health

What to screen for

Green means little to worry about, amber means ask the breeder for test results, red means manage it actively.

The breed is generally healthy, with hip dysplasia and occasional eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy being the main concerns; DNA and hip testing are recommended by Dutch breed clubs. With careful breeding management the Drentsche Patrijshond enjoys good longevity and few widespread hereditary issues.
