Origins of the Dunker

Illustrated map showing the origin of the Dunker

Norway's mountainous, snow-bound landscape called for a hound with a strong voice and a nose sensitive enough to hold a cold scent through snow, since hunters needed to track hare by sound across long distances in difficult ground. A merle coat also gave a practical visual advantage against snow for the hunter following on foot.

The long read

About the breed

Selective breeding for scenting ability in cold, snowy conditions produced a hardy, weatherproof hound with a distinctive deep voice used to signal the hunter over long distances. Its blue merle colouring, unusual among scenthounds, was deliberately retained for visibility in snow.

At home the Dunker is affectionate, calm and good with families, but it needs substantial daily exercise and access to varied scent work to stay content; without this it can become vocal and restless. It is not a breed suited to a quiet urban flat.

It remains a working and companion breed largely confined to Norway, with small numbers found in neighbouring Scandinavian countries.

Skull

The Dunker's skull is judged on balance rather than size — proportionate to the body, with a clean cheek and a stop typical of the breed. Coarseness or an over-refined head are both faulted.

Health

What to screen for

Green means little to worry about, amber means ask the breeder for test results, red means manage it actively.

Because of its merle colouring the Dunker carries a known risk of congenital deafness and eye abnormalities when merle is bred to merle, so responsible breeders test hearing and avoid merle-to-merle pairings. Hip dysplasia is also monitored through screening. Bred solid dogs from merle-carrier lines are generally as healthy as any working scenthound, and breed clubs actively promote hearing tests (BAER) in puppies to identify any affected individuals early.
