Origins of the English Springer Spaniel

The English Springer Spaniel developed from general land spaniel stock used across English farmland and hedgerow country, bred to flush game birds out of thick cover toward waiting guns or nets. Its name comes directly from this springing action.

The long read
About the breed
The breed's origins lie in general land spaniel stock used across England for centuries, with springer-type and cocker-type spaniels historically born in the same litters and separated mainly by size before becoming distinct recognised breeds in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Its job of driving birds out of thick hedgerow and undergrowth toward guns or nets gave it the name springer and shaped its energetic, driven working style.
Living with an English Springer Spaniel means committing to real daily exercise; working lines in particular are highly driven and need a genuine outlet, whether formal fieldwork, gundog training or committed off-lead running and games, since a bored Springer becomes a genuinely difficult house dog. It is affectionate, eager to please and generally excellent with families, often thriving on training and structured activity more than passive affection. Show-bred lines tend to be somewhat calmer than working lines but still need proper daily exercise. The coat requires regular brushing and the feathering on ears and legs needs checking for tangles and grass seeds after outdoor work.
Today the breed remains popular both as a serious working gundog on shoots across Britain and as a family pet, and it is also widely used in detection work by police and customs services worldwide because of its combination of nose, drive and trainability. Its enduring popularity reflects a genuinely versatile dog, though prospective owners should be honest with themselves about whether they can meet its exercise and mental stimulation needs.
