Origins of the Greenland Dog

Brought to Greenland by Inuit ancestors around a thousand years ago, this powerful sledge dog became essential to survival in one of the harshest inhabited environments on earth, pulling loaded sledges across sea ice and assisting hunters with seal and polar bear. Its thick double coat and immense endurance reflect an unbroken working tradition still practised today.

The long read
About the breed
Its role pulling heavily loaded sledges across ice and assisting in seal and polar bear hunting produced an immensely strong, enduring dog bred purely for function in extreme cold.
It is not a typical household pet: it retains strong pack instincts, a powerful prey drive and independence, and it is generally happiest working in a team rather than living as a solitary companion.
Today it remains an active working sledge dog in Greenland, protected by law as a traditional breed, with only a small number kept elsewhere by dedicated sledding enthusiasts.
