Origins of the Istrian Short-haired Hound

The rocky, scrub-covered hills of the Istrian peninsula favoured a lean, fast scenthound able to move easily over stony ground and thorny vegetation. Local hunters bred a sleek, short-coated hound that could hunt hare and fox at speed while giving tongue clearly across open country.

The long read
About the breed
Its hunting role over open, stony Mediterranean terrain produced a lean, athletic build, exceptional stamina and a strong desire to follow scent independently, traits that make it an enthusiastic and vocal working dog.
As a household companion it is affectionate and good-natured with its family but retains high energy and prey drive, needing daily vigorous exercise and secure containment; it is not best suited to flats or inactive households.
Outside Croatia and neighbouring countries the breed remains uncommon, valued mainly by traditional hunters, though a small international following has grown through FCI shows and hunting trials.
