Origins of the Istrian Wire-haired Hound

In the harsher, scrubbier parts of the Istrian karst, a coarser coat offered better protection against thorns and cold than a smooth one, so hunters selected a wire-haired variant of the local hound better suited to fox work and colder conditions. It shares its short-haired cousin's speed but carries a tougher, weatherproof jacket.

- Istrian peninsula, Croatia
- Climate it was bred for

The long read
About the breed
Its working history produced a harsh, weatherproof coat, strong bone and relentless stamina, along with the loud, resonant voice typical of trailing hounds used to keep hunters informed of the chase.
In the home it is loyal and calm with familiar people but keeps a strong hunting drive and needs consistent, active ownership; it is happiest with regular fieldwork or vigorous daily exercise rather than as a purely indoor pet.
Rarer than its short-haired relative, the breed is still used by hunters across the Balkans and Central Europe and maintains a small but dedicated following internationally.
