Origins of the Montenegrin Mountain Hound

Montenegro's steep, rocky mountains demanded an exceptionally sure-footed, tough hound able to trail fox and hare across harsh terrain and extreme weather, developed by mountain hunters who needed a dog that could work tirelessly on very little in the way of comfort or support.

The long read
About the breed
Its development in one of the harshest hunting environments in the Balkans produced an exceptionally tough, sure-footed dog with great stamina, capable of working long hours on difficult ground in demanding weather.
It is a loyal, hardy companion, generally reserved with strangers but devoted to its family, and it needs an owner able to provide substantial exercise in varied, ideally hilly terrain.
The breed remains a working hunting dog concentrated in Montenegro, recognised separately from the closely related Serbian Hound, with very limited presence outside the region.
