The long read
About the breed
Its island hunting heritage produced a tireless, wiry-framed dog with huge ears, remarkable stamina and an intensely driven prey response, shaped by generations of working the volcanic scrubland.
Outside its working role the breed can make a loyal, energetic companion, though it needs an enormous amount of exercise and a securely fenced space, as its hunting instinct remains very strong and it is not reliable off-lead near small animals.
Still used actively for hunting in the Canary Islands, the breed remains rare beyond Spain, though rescue and rehoming organisations have introduced small numbers to northern Europe in recent years.
