The long read
About the breed
The breed's name likely derives from the German "pudeln", to splash in water, reflecting its original job retrieving waterfowl for hunters across ponds and marshes in Germany and France from at least the 1500s. Its distinctive clipped coat, far from being purely decorative, was originally practical: hair was left over the chest, joints and kidneys for warmth and protection in cold water, while the hindquarters were shaved short to reduce drag while swimming. France adopted the breed enthusiastically, eventually naming it the national dog, and it moved from hunting field to salon as breeders developed increasingly elaborate show clips.
Living with a Standard Poodle means living with one of the most trainable breeds that exists. They excel at obedience, agility and scent work, learn quickly, and need real mental engagement or they become bored and inventive in unwelcome ways. The curly, dense coat does not shed like a typical double coat but mats readily and requires professional clipping roughly every six to eight weeks along with regular brushing at home. Standard Poodles are usually excellent with children and other pets when well socialised, and tend to bond closely with their family, sometimes becoming clingy without enough independence training.
Today the Standard Poodle is popular both as a show and companion dog and as the most common Poodle used in crossbreeding for "doodle" mixes. It suits active, engaged owners prepared to commit to consistent grooming and daily mental and physical exercise.
