Origins of the Pyrenean Mastiff

High summer pastures in the Spanish Pyrenees exposed flocks to wolves and bears, and shepherds needed an enormous, thick-coated dog able to withstand harsh mountain weather while confronting large predators. The breed's bulk, heavy coat and calm vigilance suited a life spent largely alone with the flock at altitude.

The long read
About the breed
Its mountain guardian role demanded a heavy, weatherproof coat, great size and an independent, watchful temperament capable of working unsupervised for long periods.
With its family it is affectionate, patient and notably gentle, especially with children, though it retains a strong protective instinct and can be reserved with strangers until properly introduced.
Still used to guard flocks in parts of Spain, the breed has also gained a following as a calm, devoted giant companion for owners able to provide the space it needs.
