Origins of the Rafeiro do Alentejo

The vast, sparsely populated plains of the Alentejo required a large, imposing dog capable of guarding flocks and isolated farmsteads against wolves and human intruders without constant supervision. Its heat-tolerant build and independent temperament suited long days alone in open, sun-baked country.

The long read
About the breed
Its guarding role demanded independence, deep territorial instinct and physical courage, producing a dog that works largely without direction and reacts decisively to perceived threats.
Within the family it is calm, loyal and affectionate, but its strong guarding instincts and size mean it needs an experienced owner, thorough socialisation and secure boundaries.
The breed still works on Portuguese farms today and has a small following abroad among those seeking a dedicated, capable livestock guardian.
