Where it comes from
Origins of the Romanian Carpathian Shepherd Dog

The remote, predator-rich pastures of the Carpathians demanded an exceptionally large, powerful guardian able to fight off wolves and bears without help. Shepherds selected purely for courage, size and protective instinct, giving little thought to uniform appearance. The breed's imposing size and dense coat reflect a working life spent almost entirely outdoors in extreme mountain conditions.

The long read
About the breed
Its role defending flocks against dangerous predators shaped an exceptionally bold, territorial dog with strong guarding instincts and considerable physical power.
As a companion it is devoted to its family but naturally dominant and protective, requiring experienced, confident handling and a secure, rural setting.
The breed remains a working guardian across much of rural Romania and has only recently started to attract limited interest outside the country.
