Origins of the Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog

The Carpathian Mountains held large predators including wolves and bears, so shepherds needed a large, powerful, heavily coated dog able to guard flocks unsupervised through harsh winters. Centuries of selection for guarding ability over appearance produced a calm but formidable livestock guardian. Its thick double coat reflects the extreme cold of its mountain homeland.

The long read
About the breed
Centuries guarding against wolves and bears shaped a calm, watchful and courageous dog that works largely independently of shepherd direction.
As a companion it is loyal and gentle with its own family but naturally protective and reserved with strangers, and it needs early socialisation and firm, consistent handling.
Still widely used as a working livestock guardian in rural Romania, the breed has only recently begun to be exported and remains rare outside its homeland.
