Origins of the Spanish Greyhound

Spain's open plains and warm climate suited a lean, fast sighthound descended from ancient Mediterranean and possibly North African coursing dogs, developed over many centuries specifically for hunting hare by sight. The Galgo Español became deeply embedded in rural Spanish hunting culture, prized above all for raw speed.

The long read
About the breed
Its long working history produced a slender, aerodynamic build, remarkable acceleration and an independent, self-sufficient hunting temperament, along with notable toughness and resilience.
As a companion, particularly among rescued former racing and coursing dogs, the Galgo is typically gentle, quiet and affectionate indoors, though it retains a strong chase instinct and benefits from secure fencing and a warm environment given its thin coat.
Many Galgos are rehomed internationally through rescue organisations after retirement from coursing or racing, and the breed has gained a strong following among adopters in Spain, the UK and elsewhere in Europe.
