Origins of the Taiwan Dog

Illustrated map showing the origin of the Taiwan Dog

In the rugged, forested mountains of Taiwan, indigenous peoples kept a medium-sized, agile hunting dog for centuries to track and corner wild boar and guard remote villages. Long isolation on the island preserved an ancient, primitive type closely related to other early Asian pariah-descended breeds.

The long read

About the breed

Its history as a boar-hunting and village-guarding dog shaped an agile, alert and resourceful animal with strong pack instincts and keen senses.

It suits an active owner familiar with primitive breeds, as it is independent-minded, loyal to its family and naturally wary of strangers.

Today it is a protected national breed in Taiwan, with conservation efforts supporting its survival alongside a small international presence among rare-breed enthusiasts.
