Origins of the Thai Ridgeback

Illustrated map showing the origin of the Thai Ridgeback

Isolated for centuries in eastern Thailand, this ancient breed developed independently to hunt game, guard homes and pull small carts in a hot, humid climate demanding a lean, tireless, low-maintenance dog. Its distinctive ridge of reverse-growing hair along the spine is a natural feature that arose within this isolated population.

The long read

About the breed

Its development as an all-purpose hunter and guardian in relative isolation shaped an intelligent, independent and highly agile dog with strong prey and territorial instincts.

It suits an experienced, active owner, being reserved with strangers, athletic enough to need substantial exercise, and prone to a strong-willed streak without consistent training.

Today it remains a working and companion dog in Thailand, with a small but dedicated international following drawn to its primitive character and striking appearance.

Skull

The Thai Ridgeback's skull is judged on balance rather than size — proportionate to the body, with a clean cheek and a stop typical of the breed. Coarseness or an over-refined head are both faulted.

Health

What to screen for

Green means little to worry about, amber means ask the breeder for test results, red means manage it actively.

Dermoid sinus, a congenital spinal defect linked to the ridge gene, is a recognised concern and puppies should be checked and cleared by a vet. Hip dysplasia can also occur. Otherwise the breed is generally hardy and athletic, having developed with minimal human interference in its native environment.

General information only — always speak to your vet about your own dog.
