Origins of the Tornjak

Illustrated map showing the origin of the Tornjak

Shepherds moving flocks through the rugged Dinaric mountains of the western Balkans needed a large, weatherproof dog able to withstand extreme temperature swings and confront wolves and bears independently. The breed's thick double coat and calm, steady guarding style reflect centuries of shared mountain life with transhumant flocks.

The long read

About the breed

Its mountain guarding heritage produced a calm, confident dog with strong territorial instincts, a deep bark and the physical hardiness to work outdoors in extreme weather.

With its family it is affectionate, patient and good with children, though it retains a strong guarding instinct and benefits from early, thorough socialisation to manage its wariness of strangers.

The breed still guards flocks in parts of the Balkans and has a small but growing following abroad as a loyal, capable family guardian.

Skull

The Tornjak's skull is judged on balance rather than size — proportionate to the body, with a clean cheek and a stop typical of the breed. Coarseness or an over-refined head are both faulted.

Health

What to screen for

Green means little to worry about, amber means ask the breeder for test results, red means manage it actively.

Hip dysplasia is the primary concern in this large, active breed, and screening of breeding stock is recommended to maintain soundness. The breed's thick double coat requires regular checking for skin issues in hot climates, and as with other large guardian breeds, controlled growth during puppyhood helps protect developing joints.
