Origins of the Transylvanian Hound

Illustrated map showing the origin of the Transylvanian Hound

The rugged Carpathian mountains around Transylvania produced hunting grounds rich in large game such as bear, boar and deer, and medieval Hungarian nobility bred a bold, deep-voiced hound able to trail and hold such dangerous quarry across steep, forested terrain.

The long read

About the breed

Centuries of use by Hungarian nobility for demanding big-game hunting shaped a courageous, resilient hound with a powerful voice and considerable stamina, historically bred in two varieties of differing size and speed.

It is loyal and affectionate with its family but strong-willed and bold, needing an experienced owner able to provide firm, consistent handling along with substantial daily exercise.

The breed came close to extinction in the 20th century and remains rare, sustained today by dedicated breeders in Hungary and Romania.

Skull

The Transylvanian Hound's skull is judged on balance rather than size — proportionate to the body, with a clean cheek and a stop typical of the breed. Coarseness or an over-refined head are both faulted.

Health

What to screen for

Green means little to worry about, amber means ask the breeder for test results, red means manage it actively.

As a breed rebuilt from a small founder population, genetic diversity is a significant practical concern and breed clubs actively manage pairings to avoid excessive inbreeding. Hip dysplasia is worth screening for given the breed's size and activity level. Otherwise the Transylvanian Hound is generally sound and hardy, its working ancestry favouring soundness over exaggerated features.
